I played with matches quite a lot back when I was a kid who was forbidden from playing with matches. Now, not so much.
gas - April 21, 2011, 5:57 pm
But pools are not made to kill people, it's a place where kids are supposed to have fun. Finally I think the best way to prevent accidents is definitely keeping them away from any weapon, the same way you would simply forbid them from touching matches.
Sean - April 21, 2011, 12:08 pm
But as they point out in Freakanomics, pool safety, for younger kids, at least, is a far greater concern.

I see your point. In a country where unfortunatly almost anyone can buy a gun, maybe I would be the first to teach my kids gun safety.
Sean - April 21, 2011, 11:12 am
A lot of overhand punching and feather boa garroting.
Sean - April 21, 2011, 11:10 am
I will probably never own a gun, or ever fire one again, but I would not try to ban them all, or even most of them. I am creeped out by dudes with whole arsenals, though. That alone suggests underlying issues.
Airman - April 21, 2011, 11:07 am
what do you expect from Surfers and movie stars?
Sean - April 21, 2011, 11:04 am
That's too simplistic, dude. California has about the same # of people as Canada, and there are more knife murders there, per year, than all types of murders in Canada. And we Canadians also have a lot of guns -- and aircraft carriers, by the way.
Airman - April 21, 2011, 11:04 am
My father, who is 86, grew up in a small town in Maine, and they hunted for their food. Very handy through the depression. So I was taught at an early age about gun safety. I hated hunting but it didn't stop him from taking me.
Sean - April 21, 2011, 10:55 am
But if your kids are likely to be arounds guns no matter what you do or don't own yourself, gun safety training is just responsible parenting.
gas - April 21, 2011, 9:24 am
I would have said scary better than irritating... Personally I can't imagine a father teaching his children how to use a firearm, except maybe in the case of hunters. Anyway, 5L for the poster :)
pzykosiz - April 21, 2011, 8:51 am
i hear you. no guns = no gun violence. you rarely hear about shootings in australia
Greeny - April 21, 2011, 6:47 am
I understand the strange part, but what's the irritating part?
forseti - April 21, 2011, 2:53 am
You can't imagine how strange and irritating this discussion is for a European...

My kids are 11 and 13, have their own guns, taken classes...long line of military here. I prefer a Sig P226 myself...for when the hubs is deployed, my girl is a great shot, like mama.
Sean - April 20, 2011, 9:18 pm
Or you can just teach her how to kill a man with a lacrosse stick. I mean that's good enough for Canadian dads all across my fine land -- and quite a few lesbians, too.

great advise, thanks. I will do that soon (nice summer father/daughter activity)
ICEMAN - April 20, 2011, 8:10 pm
Get in touch with a club that is NRA affiliated. Good people there.
ICEMAN - April 20, 2011, 8:08 pm
Sounds like you taught her well.

i was refering more to the 6 y/o. I agree that kids should be taught to use & respect a weapon. My daughter wants to learn how to shoot, just need to find the right place to take her. Most people around here are too uptight.
ICEMAN - April 20, 2011, 8:07 pm
Using firearms safely is the proper use of firearms.
MPsniper - April 20, 2011, 8:05 pm
and... i fired for 15 years with a military 1,000 yard highpower team. she grew up around weapons.
MPsniper - April 20, 2011, 8:03 pm
when my daughter was 12, i took her to army small arms firing school for M-16 rifle. it was a great dad/daughter weekend. kids MUST learn firearms safety AND the proper use of.
ICEMAN - April 20, 2011, 7:52 pm
Better yet, just teach your kids the proper use of firearms. Worked for me.
rerun - April 20, 2011, 7:44 pm

BTY - excellent poster (just keep your guns away from kids)
rerun - April 20, 2011, 7:44 pm

not ttoo soon, just today a 6 y/o kid brought a loaded gun to school for "show & tell"
marlygirl - April 20, 2011, 7:26 pm
5L Sniper, as always, the best
Sean - April 20, 2011, 7:24 pm
